Viola odorata is a species of the genus Viola, native to Europe and Asia. The leaves and flowers of the common blue violet are edible and medicinal. They are often candied or used in salad, pastries, or syrup. Violet leaf absolute is widely used in modern perfumery. Of the total 450 species that are listed in the world, twenty of them grow in temperate climates, such as the Viola odorata which we use in perfumery.
France
The violet was first cultivated in Grasse and is now grown in Tourrettes-Sur-Loup and the Var. Due to extraction costs and development of synthetic “equivalents”, violet leave extracts have slowly decreased in France. However, dsm-firmenich is one of the few producers to offer a 100% pure violet leaf absolute sourced in France to keep supporting local farmers and promoting this quality.
