Upcycling description

Each year, beekeepers renew 20% of the hives’ frames, recurringly melting them for the duration of a year while reusing the wax and obtaining new frames. However, once this material become too old for reuse, dsm-firmenich purchases it for extraction. After extraction, the remaining beeswax is subsequently sold to create candles for other industries.

Process

A primary extraction with a volatile solvent on fresh or dry biomass yields to a Concrete or Resinoid.
The Absolute is obtained via a second purification step in the process.

Sourcing

France

Beeswax is sourced mainly from small operation local bee keepers in the south of France. dsm-firmenich is among one of the last actors to source honeycombs from local, fully traceable, beekeepers in the region (Var, Drôme, Hautes-Alpes, Alpes Maritimes and Vaucluse).
Honeycombs are collected from beehives directly from a community of beekeepers, before and after the honey harvest season. Extraction is performed at the dsm-firmenich factory in Tourrettes, and then the remaining beeswax is sold to create candles or for the cosmetics industry.
dsm-firmenich’s sourcing agreements with suppliers guarantees a premium quality as the purchased honeycombs are untreated, without containing any naphthalene.
