Olfactive description

Floral, green, orange blossom like, animalic, it offers an intensely warm, rich and highly diffusive note. Methyl anthranylate provides an orange blossom like effect on top, associated with a green and less indolic note than grandiflorum.

Perfumery usage

This exceptional sambac profile is shining with fruity and green nuances, which is the particularity of Indian origin, while its animalic facets brings sensuality. It is widely used in orange flower and pittosporum accords.

Upcycling description

In India 95% of the flowers are used for ornamental or religious ceremonies, so, at the end of the day, when sacred flowers remain unsold at the flowers markets, and are due to be thrown away, Jasmine Concrete EPL purchases them.

This strategy is perfectly integrated into local traditions: Jasmine Concrete’s sourcing strategy helps to ensure flowers do not go to waste, growers still receive a return on what they have sourced, and flowers are not thrown away.

Process

A primary extraction with a volatile solvent on fresh or dry biomass yields to a Concrete or Resinoid.
The Absolute is obtained via a second purification step in the process.

Sourcing

Jasminum Sambac is native to Southern Asia, India, Philippines, Myanmar and Sri Lanka. In India the flowers are used for decorative religious ornaments, in China mainly for tea. The worldwide production is smaller than the production of Jasmine Grandiflorum, probably a little more than a third (5MT of concrete). 80% of the production comes from India (Tamil Nadu) and 20% from China. dsm-firmenich was one of the first to introduce Jasmine Sambac into the creative palette for Western Fine Fragrance development, and this premium absolute has become one of the company’s signature notes. Jasmine sambac is a night blooming flower (said to capture the wisdom and the mystery of the moonlight).

China

Chinese Sambac concrete and absolute comes from Hengxian, Guangxi Province. During harvest, flowers are hand-picked each morning and sold the same day, or flowers are directly brought to the factories for extraction. Hengxian's flower market is a key exchange place in the industry.

India

dsm-firmenich’s partner, Jasmine Concrete EPL, sources from the Madurai Tamil Nadu state in India. They buy buds leftover from trade, receiving high quality and reducing waste. Open flowers provide top olfactive quality for concretes, so buds are left on the floor to bloom before extraction. dsm-firmenich is a minority shareholder of Jasmine Concrete EPL. To secure the best quality flowers from these regions and to ensure the best processing knowledge is applied, dsm-firmenich and Jasmine Concrete Exports in India signed a joint venture in 2014. The cooperation promises a sustainable approach.
