dsm-firmenich’s main supplier of Rose Damascena is Turkey, Bulgaria, Morocco and Iran. Rose Damascena blooms once a year, in early summer. The flowers are harvested early in the morning in order to preserve olfactive components in the petals. Rose Damascena is used in both Rose Oil and Rose Absolute at FIRMENICH. Both Turkey and Bulgaria are growing around 13,000MT of petals per year.

Bulgaria
In Bulgaria, dsm-firmenich sources its Rose from its partner who is recognized worldwide as the leading Bulgarian producer of 100% pure and Natural Rose. Bulgaria's Rose valley is in the Balkan Mountain and extends for apx. 80km. at an altitude of 400m to 600m. The average mix in Bulgaria between rose oil and concrete is the following: around 3MT of oil and 2MT of concrete.
Turkey
Today, Turkey is the largest producers of rose oil in the world, producing in total 10 tons per year. dsm-firmenich sources Rose Damascena from a family owned company with a history going back as early as 1950 when they started the cultivation of Rose Damascena in Senir, near the lake of Burdur. The successful growing area today is around the city of Isparta, north of Antalya, where dozens of villages have been growing roses. Turkey is processing more the concrete and absolute. The Roses grow at different altitudes, from 600 to 1300 meters. Differing pickings and bloomings allow factories to manage their capacities.
Different farming models are existing today in the region: 60% of roses are coming from family farming models and 40% from bogger farms.
Rose activities are impacting close to 50,000 people in the region, from farmers, pickers, collectors to distillers.
The average mix in Turkey between rose and concrete is the following: around 2MT of oil and 5MT of concrete.
Morocco
Since the 40’s, Rose Damascena has been picked and extracted in south Morocco around the M’Goun and Daddes rivers. Morocco there is a large focus on Morocco for concrete and absolute requirements. Flowers are harvested manually early in the morning in order to preserve olfactive components in the petals.
