The plant, a tall perennial grass, develops a strong root system which helps stabilize the ground. The growth of Vetiver itself helps prevent soil erosion and flooding in tropical climates. Vetiver roots are re-planted right after the harvest and has to grow for a minimum of 12 months before next harvest. The roots are shacked to remove dust and let to dry in the fields before distillation. Providing most of the world’s total output, Haiti is the leading source for Vetiver essential oil. Vetiver oil, has been produced for decades in Haiti, where the tropical plant enjoys ideal growing conditions in a favorable climate and volcanic soils.
Haiti
Haitian vetiver plays an essential role in the economy of the department. Its production occupies more than 20,000 peasant families and a dozen distilleries. Our main partner is a family business that has been processing vetiver since 1958. It produces around 45 tons of oil per year, which it exports to the perfume and aromatherapy markets, mainly in Europe, Latin America, India and USA. To do this, it employs more than 150 people and sources its roots from several hundred producers.
